This is great opportunity to chase some very special birds in a remote and beautiful part of Queenslands arid interior.
From the very beginning of this adventure, you will be enthralled, not only by the stunning landscapes of the 'Outback' but also its impressive birding highlights.
Traveling with a small group in a luxury 4wd, whilst overnighting in quality accommodation, certainly is a rewarding and memorable way to bird this wonderful region.
Pre-tour night Monday the 4th of June: You will be accommodated in Mt Isa and meet and greet for dinner.
Day one: We begin the tour from pick up at your overnight accommodation in Mt Isa. Birding the Mt Isa township area, before driving on to Cloncurry. Targeting Varied Lorikeet, Longtail and Painted Finch, Grey-headed and Grey-fronted Honeyeater, Crimson Chat, as well as a variety of waders and waterbirds at the beautiful Lake Moondarra. o/night Cloncurry, (B/L,D)
Day two: We head east for the iconic Queensland outback township of Winton, staying alert for Cloncurry Ringneck, Budgerigar and Cockatiel, with a late afternoon wetland visit for Bailon's and Australian Spotted Crake, Plumhead Finch and Little Grassbird. o/night Winton, (B/L/D).
Day three: An adventure south today, down to the amazing 'Dinosaur Stampede National Monument' at the Lark Quarry Conservation Park. A real treat for visiting birders, not only a very interesting look into a prehistoric event, but a great area to bird. Our hit list today includes the Rufous-crowned Emu-wren, Crested Bellbird, Rusty Grasswren (region split from Striated Grasswren), Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush and the nomadic Pied and Black Honeyeaters. as well as a chance sighting of the rare Grey Falcon. o/night Winton, (B/L/D).
Day four: We head further south west today for the isolated township of Boulia, an enjoyable drive across open plains and grasslands, as we keep on the look out for species like the Flock Bronzwing, Black Falcon, Halls Babbler, Little Eagle and Inland Dotterel. o/night Boulia, (B/L/D).
Day five: We spend the day relaxing and birding in the Boulia district getting a real feel for the arid interior as we chase up any more region specials that we are still to find, including Black-tailed Treecreeper, Spinifex Pigeon and chance sightings of Gibberbird. o/night Boulia, (B/L/D).
Day six: We complete this exciting remote area circuit today by heading north to Dajarra and on to Mt Isa. Very interesting country and birding along the way, before having a late afternoon crack at one of the regions specialty the Kalkadoon Grasswren. o/night Mt Isa. (B/L/D).
Day seven: We have the elusive Carpentaria Grasswren in our sights today as well as Painted Finch, Spinifexbird and try to clean up any more target species which we may still need in the Mt Isa region. o/night Mt Isa, (B/L/D)
Day eight: This morning after breakfast we will bird until lunchtime our targets and direction will be flexible, after our final lunch our tour is over and guests can either be dropped back at their own vehicles or airport drop off can be arranged. (B/L).
Please note, cool to cold nights, with bright sunny days is normal in this region for this time of year. Average fitness required, some walking in spinifex country (long pants) with minimal hill climbing. Guests can opt out of any birding sessions they wish.
