Golden Bowerbird (M)
When it comes to birding in Far North Queensland, Cairns is perfectly situated to base yourself and explore a number of stunning birding locations.
Our favourite birdwatching site include the Cairns shorefront, Northern Beaches and Great Barrier Reef to the tropical rainforests of the world-renowned Atherton Tablelands.
To help the visiting birder Great Northern Tours offer a variety of tours departing from Cairns including half day outings to multi-day, fully accommodated adventures. Depending on time available and whether you have a target species list or specific photography ambitions, your local guide David Mead will endeavour to structure an itinerary to suit your needs.
Cairns is unmatched by any other birding region in Australia when it comes to the sheer number and diversity of avifauna species within a days drive.
Lesser Sooty Owl
From migratory shorebirds, skulkers in the mangrove-lined estuaries to the Tablelands which boast a great selection of Wet Tropics endemics including the Victoria's Riflebird, Fernwren, Golden and Tooth-billed Bowerbirds, Pied Monarch, Chowchilla, Grey-headed Robin and Lesser Sooty Owl to name a few.
Our 'Big Day Out' birding tour option will see our group also birding north west of Mareeba and which extensively adds to an already diverse day of birdwatching from the Cairns waterfront to the 'Edge of the Outback'.
